Autumn's Call

Autumn's Call

Gunsight, Lookout and Angel Peaks provide a dramatic backdrop for the elk on the meadow known as Floodwater Flat.  As the snow melts in the spring, the meadow fills with water and slowly drains throughout the summer and fall, providing a constantly changing array of wildflowers and wildlife.  Flood water Flat is nestled among the eleven lakes in the Anthony Lake
area located in the Elkhorn Mountains northwest of Baker City, Oregon.  Between 1947 and 1961, the Forest Service laid out twenty-five cabin sites above Floodwater Flat.  In 1964 W.E. Roake of Richland, Washington put up a rib arch cabin on lot 23.  Thank you to Jim and Donna Roake for sharing their memories of their father and his dream.

Main Street Main Street

A warm summer morning brings locals and visitors to our historic hometown "Main Street." The genuine small town appeal is evident as people go about their business in a safe and friendly atmosphere where the only potential danger is a timid dachshund.

Where Steeples and Eagles Meet Baker City- Where Steeples and Eagles Meet

A view of historic Baker City from the Southwest captures the "steepled" skyline as it meets the majestic peaks of the Blue Mountains known locally as the "Eagles".  The rooftops, afternoon shadows and autumn colors of Baker City are punctuated by the grandiose steeples and cupolas of some of the finest architecture in Oregon.  Nestled in a valley between the "Elkhorns" to the west and "Eagles" to the east, one can readily feel the peace and tranquility of the city we call home.

The rich, beautiful colors of the original "Baker City Narrative" can viewed in person at the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, in Baker City, Oregon.

Peace of Heaven 'Peace' of Heaven

Sam peers intently at the ducks on Phillips Pond where the Elkhorn Mountains provide the perfect backdrop for this thirty-two acre refuge brimming with ponds, trails and bridges.  Phillips Park is located in the Pine Creek area west of Baker City, Oregon.  Don Phillips has developed the park into a beautiful setting for the residents of Baker County to enjoy and celebrate special moments in their lives.  Countless weddings, family reunions, company picnics, church, school and youth group activities have chosen this site to bask in the beauty and solitude of this 'Peace' of Heaven.

Serenity Serenity

Anthony Lakes Ski Area rests among the peaks of the Elkhorn Mountains northwest of Baker City, Oregon.  Just beyond the groomed powder-snow runs of the ski area Lookout and Angel Peak thrust upward formidably, seemingly to protect the ice-covered Anthony Lake.  These majestic mountains provide a challenge for summertime hikers and adventure to those who ski the chutes.  All who visit are captivated by the wondrous beauty and serenity of the area.

Hells Canyon- A Perspective

Hells Canyon - A Perspective

There are places where the world has remained pristine.  One such place is the Hells Canyon Wilderness Area where two majestic mountain ranges are severed by North America's deepest canyon.  The Seven Devils in Idaho sweep skyward for up to 9,393 feet dominating the skyline.  The "Alps of North America" or Wallowa Mountains peer serenely over the crevice carved by nature over millions of years.  The Snake River winds through the canyon cutting even deeper the rock walls that propel skyward.  The tranquility and magnitude of this retreat kindle the spirit and nourish the soul.

The Elkhorn Mountains of the Blue Mountain Range provide a scenic backdrop for Baker City, Oregon.  Arriving with a blanket of snow in November appears the shadow of an Indian resting serenely in the bowl of Elkhorn Peak and signaling the arrival of winter.  He appears daily in sunshine from November through February from 11:00A.M. to 2:00P.M. contributing to the beauty of this region.  Throughout the winter months he is "Guardian of the Valley."
